Dressing like the Gossip Girl

Chinese girls are imitating the stars of the US teen drama series.

TANG Shan ran to her desk, screaming with delight when she saw the package containing her new dress.

Tang, a 26-year-old graduate, had shopped online, spending 80 yuan (RM40) on a white dress similar to that worn by one of the lead characters in the Gossip Girl series.

“I am a huge fan of Gossip Girl. I want to dress exactly like Jenny Humphrey in the show,” said Tang.

The American teen drama series highlights the everyday lives of privileged young adults on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in New York.

Popular characters in the series include Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) who are usually garbed in luxury brands such as Chanel, Prada and Stella McCartney in the series.

According to the China Market Research Group, nearly five million Chinese people watch each new episode of Gossip Girl on the Internet, because the show isn’t broadcast on the country’s TV network. It found an increasing number of young Chinese girls wanting to imitate TV stars by buying the expensive brands featured in their shows.

“In China, Gossip Girl is one of the most popular fashion series to date. Colours, textures and proportions were all used to incorporate fashion into every aspect of the show,” said Wang Xiaoyuan, an editor with the Chinese version of Cosmopolitan magazine.

“For sure, the series will influence Chinese young ladies’ fashion tastes.”

Kate Zhou Handbags in Dongzhimen, Beijing, displays dozens of US designer handbags in its windows at an average price of around 3,000 yuan (RM1,500) to 4,000 yuan (RM2,000).

“More than 50% of our customers are young girls who don’t earn much but want to spend a month’s salary on a designer bag,” said saleswoman Magy Huang.

According to a report published by World Luxury Association this year, total consumption in the Chinese mainland luxury market reached US$10.7bil (RM33.9bil), excluding private jets, yachts or luxury cars – making the country the world’s second largest consumer of luxury goods following Japan.

Andy Kline, an international researcher for the World Luxury Association, said that because of yuan appreciation and the depreciation of the euro, the purchasing power of Chinese consumers in the international market has increased.

Last year, Asian people bought US$69bil (RM217.8bil) luxury products from the European market, of which US$50bil (RM158.5bil) was contributed by Chinese customers.

The World Luxury Association says China’s appetite for luxuries is growing faster than that of any other country. China will become the largest luxury goods market and its sales volume will reach US$14.6bil (RM46.6bil) in the next four or five years.

Research from Bain Capital, one of the world’s leading business strategy consultancy firms, showed that in 2010, sales of luxury goods increased substantially year-on-year by 30% in China, while sales declined in Japan and the United States, the world’s other top luxury goods markets.

“Some young Chinese girls want to show their privileged social status by dressing in labels,” said fashion editor Wang. “Others like wearing designer clothes and dream of meeting their Prince Charming.”

Sun Shijin, director of the Psychology Research Center at Fudan University in Shanghai, said: “A large number of Chinese consumers are still in a stage of conspicuous consumption.

“As China has achieved new economic heights and its society recently entered an era of mass consumption, the purchasing power of Chinese citizens is rising along with the development of the commodity economy.

“People sometimes lose their sense of reason when they pursue a material life. Conspicuous consumption during a period of social transition is an inevitable process of social development.”

Geoffrey Miller, in his book, Spent: Sex, Evolution, and Consumer Behavior, wrote: “The conspicuous consumption by human females, especially for products such as Prada handbags and Manolo Blahnik shoes, is to compete to attract the higher-quality males. Sadly, the evidence so far suggests that men pay very little attention to such conspicuous consumption by women.”

How To Organize Your Closet

Share this post on Reddit StumbleUpon this post

bangstyle.com salvation army organize new you new year happy goodwill fashion easy steps de clutter celebrate 2012 fashion How To Organize Your ClosetLittle girls may lay down to sleep in fear of fictitious closet monsters, but not-so-childish ladies like you and I often live in fear of a very different, but very real closet ghoul. If you are a Messy Molly, Pack Rat Penny or Clutter-Me-Carol, then this article is for you. There is no better time to de-clutter your life than at the start of a brand new year, and no better place to start than your bedroom closet.

One of the very valuable lessons that my mother taught me was to live within my means. Sometimes this meant that I couldn’t always have a brand new pair of shoes to wear to school, or that we would take a weekend vacation together as a family instead of going away on an exotic summer cruise, but years of watching my mother save instead of spend has given me an incredibly successful jumpstart into adulthood. I have no problem bringing my lunch to work instead of ordering takeout, or watching my favorite television shows on Hulu.com instead of paying for cable. My one weakness however, is clothes. I love love love shopping. The thrill of the hunt, the satisfaction of finding the perfect dress or designed-just-for-me pair of shoes far outweighs the satisfaction of a fancy dinner or movie premiere, in my opinion anyway. Needless to say, my walk in closet is overflowing with vintage skirts, girly blouses, and countless pairs of shoes. To be more honest, it is a tulle-based train wreck with absolutely no rhyme or reason.

But this year is going to be different. New year, new me! Mom often tells me that she was a quite the pack-rat before she met and married my father, so there may be hope for me yet. In the year 2012, I will turn 25-years-old, and I am whole-heartedly committed to developing my organizational skills (after all, how else will I make room for all of the brand new 2012 fashions?) I thought it would be nice to share my plan of attack with all of you lovely readers, because if you are anything like my girlfriends and I, your closet could use good cleansing as well.

1. Set a date and make sure to keep it.

Open wide those closet doors, dolls, and take a long, hard look at the level of damage. Be honest when gauging how many hours you think it is going to take to turn that mess into a masterpiece.

2. Recruit a friend to help you.

Pick a guy or gal who is going to be honest with you. If you’ve got a god-awful blazer or two hanging out in your “maybe” pile, you’d want a good friend to help you throw it away, right? Having a friend around will also make the daunting task of cleaning and organizing a little more enjoyable. Be careful to pick someone who you know will keep you on task. You’ll defeat the purpose of setting aside a time to clean if all you end up doing is sitting on your bed watching old movies and painting your nails.

3. Take everything out of your closet. Yes, I mean all of it.

It may seem easier to organize things one section at a time, but since we’re being real here, sometimes rouge socks and crumpled up t-shirts have a tendency to get lodged and lost in the mess, never to be seen again until moving day. So roll up your big girl sleeves, and get everything out of there. Once you have cleaned everything out of your closet, clean your actual closet. Sweep, vacuum, disinfect–do whatever you need to do to make sure that the things you decide to keep are put back in a sanitary environment.

4. Quickly sort into three piles.

Quickly is the key here. Don’t take twenty minutes to decide if you want to keep your Jr. high track jacket or not. These are the choices: keep, toss, maybe. The maybe pile should be the smallest, and after consulting your right hand man, there should only be two piles left. If you haven’t used or worn something in 6 months or more (9 months for seasonal items), put it in the toss pile. If you want to feel better about getting rid of your once-loved items, consider giving them to a Goodwill or Salvation Army.

5. Organize the keep pile, then put it back into your closet.

Congratulations, your piles have been sorted! But you aren’t finished yet. Take a short snack or coffee break if you need to, then get right back to work. Put everything from the keep pile back into your closet, neatly organized. This shouldn’t take very long with the diligent help of your friend.

6. Decide what to do with the remaining piles.

First decide whether or not the items in the maybe pile are here to stay or good to go. Once you have your toss or give away pile organized, start packing it away. For the toss items, put into trash bags and immediately throw them away. If you have decided to give old clothes and shoes away to a charity, pack the items into boxes and put the boxes into your car (you have momentum on your side right now; if you dilly dally with the give away and toss items, they very well may sit on the floor of your room for the entire year, and we don’t want that!)

7. Take a deep breath, sit back, and revel in your accomplishment.

You did it! Hooray! Now that you have a clean closet and are ready to start the new year off on the right foot, you should have a little something special to help you celebrate. Take your friend out for a drink and a movie–you both deserve it!

Family business good for the sole – Mat

WASILLA – Fans of well-made footwear no longer need to drive to
Anchorage to pamper their toes in their favorite kicks.

Just in time for Christmas, the Long family has opened what may be
the Mat-Su Valley’s first independent shoe store Dec. 22 in the
Creekside Plaza, 1830 E. Parks Highway.

After years working in and managing Anchorage shoe stores,
patriarch Dave Long said the family decided to parlay its years of
retail and shoe store experience into a new shopping opportunity
for Valley shoe shoppers.

In stock at Northern Comfort Shoes and Apparel now are brands like
Dansko, Børn, Doc Martin, Bogs and Merrell. Coming soon are shoes
and boots by Sorrell, Solomon and Columbia.

Dave and Tammye Long said their children have years of experience
working in Anchorage shoe stores. After kicking the idea around for
a few years, they took classes through the Alaska Small Business
Development Center in Wasilla and opened the new shoe store last
month.

“It’s a good resource for people wanting to start a business,” Dave
said. “And a lot of their classes are free.”

Siblings Elise and Christian Long also played a big role in picking
the product, their parents said.

Elise said she picked out shoes with an eye to Alaska’s environment
and the Valley’s laid-back fashion sense.

“And from the reactions we are getting, I think you’ve made good
choices,” Tammye said.

Christian said the goal is to offer quality shoes that will perform
well in Alaska’s unforgiving environment. He said Alaska’s weather
is hard on shoes, too, and cheap department store shoes often break
or fall apart in a few months.

Mom Tammye said consumers are beginning to see the benefits of
investing in well-made footwear.

“I think people are starting to realize that it is actually cheaper
to buy one pair of well-made shoes rather than replacing them every
few months,” she said.

Dad Dave said he’s worn Dansko’s for years and has purchased so
many pairs for his family over the years that it just made sense to
open a store.

Elise said the store is a good fit all around. “Our whole family is
shoe people,” she said.

For now, both parents also work other jobs, too. Tammye is a
manager at Target and Dave operates a vessel based in Dutch
Harbor.

“It was a good decision,” Dave said. “We want to be here for a
while.”

Tammye said it’s been great working together as a family. She said
they taught their kids school at home until they were high school
aged and this business has provided an opportunity for the family
to spend lots of time together.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to work with our kids,”
she said.

In addition to shoes, the store also offers Smartwool apparel and a
good selection of “crazy” tights, Tammye said.

In the future, Christian said the store plans to offer ski and
snowboard gear, too.

“We want to grow with the community,” Dave said. “Anything we can
think of to help the community – I’m all for it.”

Although the store has only been open 10 days, he said they welcome
from the community has been warm and enthusiastic.

“We already seeing ladies coming in off the farm to get their
Danskos,” Dave said.

Elegance on horseback: Ladies’ Sidesaddle Attire

“Classy” and “beautiful” were the words that came to mind when I saw my first sidesaddle dress, as modeled by Connie Klauzer of the Frontier Belles Sidesaddle Precision Drill Team (based in Grand Junction, Colo). Copied from an authentic museum piece, the self-sewn, bright red jacket and matching, floor-length skirt gave her a positively regal appearance. The darts in the jacket make it form-fitting and ladylike,” she explained to me. “Darker colors were more common during that era, with blue, black or deep mauve being most frequently chosen. Heavier materials like gabardine or wool were used then, too. Our riding group wears bright colors, though (including stripes, prints and whites) and we prefer polyesters, which are easier to wash.”

The 15 to 18 current members of the club, which was founded in 1957, have performed their galloping charges, crossovers and other precision drills — including jumps — throughout New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. (“Women used to jump gullies and ditches in sidesaddles while doing ranch work,” Connie reminded me.) Riders are not only outfitted in period sidesaddle clothing from the mid-1860s through late 1880s but they also accessorize with gloves, a top hat or derby, old-fashioned boots or shoes, a choker or stock tie, decorative feathers and even brooches. “Whalebone stays were added to make a woman sit up straight, too — although we don’t use them,” she continued with a wry smile, “and the high collars were for protection in winter … plus, back then the ladies needed to be covered up.” Holding both arms out, she demonstrated yet another special feature of her attire: the sleeves were curved, rather than straight, because of rein holding.

It takes approximately five yards of fabric for each outfit, and all materials are purchased through the organization. (In addition to the dresses, the women also make a special form of trousers to wear underneath the skirts.) Elaborate braiding, or cording, can be added for an even more elegant look and of course, everything must be lined, preferably in a “dark, tight weave fabric such as polished cotton, percale, high quality muslin, etc.” according to the instructions for a Corded Jacket by Heidi Marsh (copyright 1987). Even for someone who loves to sew, a sidesaddle dress project most definitely sounds a lot more complicated than merely pulling on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and jumping onto a horse bareback!

The sidesaddle was developed in the latter part of the 16th century as a way to accommodate the long skirts — which made it difficult to ride astride — that were in fashion back then. The riding skirt, which has more length on the right side, can be gathered up when a woman is on the ground. That section is then looped around a button in the back, under the jacket (which is cut longer than a standard English version) thus making it look like she is wearing a bustle. When the rider is seated on her horse, the extra material drapes over the animal’s left side, covering the rider’s knees and ankles. Mounting, I learned, was a trick in itself. Connie, who at one time rode a horse that was 16.2 hands high, said that “First, you have to stand on something, then turn around, and sit down. That helps keep the attire straight. Of course, back in the olden days ladies had grooms for assistance!”

Carefully turning up the ends of her own skirt, Connie showed me the extra-wide hem, which was designed for added weight. Rocks were commonly sewn into the fabric a century ago since they also helped to hold the skirts down — especially during wind. As for Frontier Belle members, they “use elastic loops (to go under the shoe) or pins to attach their skirts to their trousers …” with that, Connie turned up the front corner of her jacket and revealed two, large safety pins for emergency … “because otherwise, it might fly up over the rider’s head, and we certainly wouldn’t want that.”

Because The Frontier Belles are totally self-supporting, paying for all of their own insurance, gasoline, feed and lodging when they travel, as a fund raiser they sponsor the Mesa County Fair Horse Show (held at the Grand Junction fairgrounds) each July. Over the past 54 years, over 200 women have participated in the drill team riding everything from Quarter horses to Arabs to gaited breeds. It’s fun, it’s enjoyable, and it’s highly entertaining for the spectators, so keep an eye out in the Fence Post for the next time that they’re scheduled to perform — it’ll make you feel as if you’ve been transported back in time.

Pop goes the red carpet

Nowhere was the spectrum of fashion more clearly pushed in 2011 than on the radio. Well, on the people on the radio, to be more exact.

Fashion and music have always gone hand in hand, but the pop music circus proved to be a more fertile than usual breeding ground for an explosion of trends. Perhaps it was because women – all embodying different attitudes and styles – ruled the charts this year, providing them constant exposure on television and their red carpet capers. The only guy to make much of an impression on both the charts and the sartorial stakes was Bruno Mars – and even then all he did was wear a hat.

The girls, however, fearlessly led the trendy way. Here, the ladies (and a dude) from MediaCorp Radio present the evidence.

Rosalyn Lee as Lady Gaga: Androgyny

Borrowing a piece – more specifically, the tuxedo – from the gentleman’s wardrobe was a wildly favourable Autumn/Winter 2011 trend. The tuxedo movement, which was spurred by fashion empires such as Dolce Gabbana, Chanel, Givenchy, Lanvin and Balmain, saw fashion fiends like Phoebe Philo of Celine and Kirsten Dunst rocking its dapper splendour at the Council Of Fashion Designers Of America (CFDA) Awards ceremony. But it took Lady Gaga – who else? – to elevate the look to mass consciousness when she showed up as her male alter ego Jo Calderone at the MTV Video Music Awards. Instead of a crisp white shirt, Gaga threw on a raggedy white T-shirt with a rather sharp black tux. It was an improvement from meat.

“I used to be really, really into her until she just got too much for me. She just dresses to shock and I find myself rolling my eyes more than going, ‘Wow, it’s so cool’”. Actually, I’m more curious to see what she wears at home. Does she own normal clothes? Does she own jeans?” – 987FM’s Rozz on Gaga

Jean Danker as Nicki Minaj: More is more

Colours, textures and patterns all played a vital role in forming one of Fall/Winter 2011 key trends – and the bulk of rap princess Nicki Minaj’s wardrobe. Trinidadian-born, American-raised Minaj sampled the runways of Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Comme des Garcons and Etro, constantly tossing up a merry medley of fun, zest and zing in her brightly hued dresses, jackets, accessories and shoes – whether they matched or not.

“She’s all about outrageous, bright colours, which I love as well. I always try to be in a bright colour – neon pinks and lime greens and things like that. I love (her) outrageousness … I couldn’t commit to it every day but it’s a lot of fun!” – Class 95FM’s Jean on Nicki

Georgina Chang as Katy Perry: Retro glamour

And then there was Katy Perry, who successfully nailed the retro glamour of the ’60s, which made a comeback in a big way this Autumn/Winter season. Designers like Christopher Bailey of Burberry Prorsum and Raf Simons of Jil Sander married clean cut button-ups and sleek linen suit pants in their London and Milan shows respectively, proving that streamlined silhouettes and cocoon profiles still work supremely well together.

“Her style is fun, sexy, girly and yet very appealing. I won’t emulate the candy frost colours because it’s not my style but I can see why a lot of girls do … It’s fun to dress up like Katy Perry because you’re being a little bit experimental.” – Lush 99.5FM’s Georgina on Katy

Justin Ang as Adele: Ladylike dressing

English singer-songwriter Adele took the female-pop-singer-road less travelled and actually covered her body in clothing. Ladylike dressing was a huge trend at the Spring/Summer 2011 showcases in Paris, New York, London and Milan, and the 23-year-old found her wardrobe staples in the form of classic three-quarter length skirts, voluminous dresses and longer hemlines. The unlikely style icon landed the covers of Vogue UK, Cosmopolitan and Glamour – and she’s rumoured to have scored the March 2012 cover of American Vogue.

“Being a woman is really, really hard. There’s always hair in your face, and lashes in your eyes, and hair getting stuck in your lipstick – so I don’t know how women do it, day in day out. I have newfound respect for a woman who puts so much into looking good every day.” – 987FM’s Justin(e) on Adele

Denise Tan as Amy Winehouse: A tribute

We’ll never forget how Amy Winehouse sounded. We won’t forget how she looked either, in all her sculptural beehive tease, bosom-spilling tops and retro eyeliner glory. The dearly departed 27-year-old songbird pointed pop in a whole new direction, and her style is forever cemented in the holy fashion grounds of rock ‘n’ roll.

“I really love the kind of retro sensibility that she had. It’s quite my own personal style – minus the tattoos and the drugs.” – Gold 90.5FM’s Denise on Amy

Meet entrepreneur Patricia Chatti of the Cia Monet online shopping experience

IMG_9365.jpg
Patricia Chiatti, creator of Cia Monet online shopping outlet.

Thirty-nine year old
Bahamian entrepreneur Patricia Chatti is taking bold and creative steps in the retail fashion world, not only in her country, but in
the global market as well. Chatti is the
creator and CEO of the Cia Monet fashion house, an online fashion source
offering top designer name brands.

“People love high-end products from names like Gucci,
Jimmy Choo, BCBG and even Chanel and when they can get them at
affordable prices the business works by providing a much needed service, in particular in a country made up of islands and with a more limited in-store shopping experience,” said Chatti who came from 19 years in the banking world.

“My goal is to

make high-end fashion a part of everyday life.”

When asked what inspired her business, Chatti said, “

The desire to afford the option of a more classier, upscale
sophisticated look for the business professionals in the Bahamas as it
relates to couture clothing, shoes, handbags and jewelery for every
occasion whether its career, sexy social, sporty casual, sophisticated
or elegant.”

As the creator of
two extremely unconventional businesses, (she also created Make Em Listen, showcasing Bahamian
performing artists) Chatti is just beginning to make her mark in The Bahamas.
Cia Monet is expanding so quickly she’s rushing to keep up with
her customer’s demands.

Cia
Monet came about when Chatti
returned to The Bahamas in 2005.  “It was out of pure necessity,” said Chatti reflecting back to that time. “When
I returned home I knew I didn’t want to work for just anyone, but at the same
time I needed to support myself and my daughter,” she said. “When I
came home I brought $700 worth of David Yuman and John Hardy jewelry
with me to sell. That was all I had, and by the grace of God, in less than
a month they were sold. That inspired me to open Cia Monet.”

“My
goal has always been to think outside the box,” said the single mother. “I don’t ever want to do anything that someone else is doing; I
always want to be different. When l see a need or an opportunity, I then find a way to fill that need or to take
advantage of that opportunity. This is how Cia Monet has grown.”

An
online company is not the typical clothing and accessory
company says Chatti. “Its designed to make shopping fun and simple. Cia Monet
is all about providing my clientele with high-end name brands such as Bvalgari, Tiffany, Burberry, Mont Blanc, and even
Links of London.

“We sell it all,” says Chatti. “If you want Gucci sheets you can
get it. If you want YSL fashions, you can get it. We have it all from sheets to shoes at Cia Monet.”

Having lived in the United States for 18
years, Chatti says that she knows and understands how hard the industry can be is and is using her networking abilities and social media to propel her forward.

“I know that I have what it takes to make my businesses
work. I have never been afraid to speak my mind or to think outside if
the box.”

Now she says her focus is expanding her brand and her companies.

“My
focus right now is to expand my businesses more internationally,” she says.
“Right now we have a large presence in The Bahamas but there is so much more out there thanks to the internet. I want both Cia Monet  and Make’Em Listen to
be as big as they can be and I know that 2012 is the year for that to
happen.”

How to order: Cia Monet has extended its brand over the years from a website
based company to a “FACEBOOK  Fashion House and conglamorite of
companies.” Due to the increased demand they’ve expanded with Cia Monet
Kidz. Cia Monet Leather (shoes and handbags), Cia Monet Couture (ladies
designer only), Cia Monet Mens Store, Cia Monet Models / Photo Shoots (Pprofessional p

hoto shoots by Cia Monet for Cia Monet) and soon to come Cia
Monet Juniors and Cia Monet Jewelry.

“The goal is to make shopping fun and that’s what we do at Cia Monet.”

Cia Monet provides high-end fashions, accessories, jewelry, cosmetics and
fragrances from the lines of Bvalgari, Tiffany, Chloe,. Burberry, Mont
Blanc, Links of London, Gucci, Chane

l, BCBG and even Mac Cosmetics.

New Year, New You — It’s A Lady Thing

NEW YORK, Dec. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –
A new year marks a new beginning, a clean slate, or a chance to improve; whether it’s to lose 20 pounds, eat healthier, see more family and friends… the list goes on! This year, Lady Foot Locker offers easy ways to add new excitement to your every day life, to take you one step closer to your ultimate goal. Small steps like wearing bold color, trying a new sport, or spending more time with your friends, is all you need to be a more fabulous you in 2012.

As seen on the fashion runways for Spring 2012, mango orange is the hot color for the season! If your wardrobe is currently an ocean of black and grey, then brighten it up with colorful shoes. The lightweight favorite Nike Frees is your choice for a bold statement, while adding an extra spring into your run! For a more subtle pop, go with the Nike Max 2009 or the brand new Nike Free Twist, both in grey with mango accents.

Make it a goal to stay fit with fun activities and classes, rather than setting a specific weight goal. Invite your friends to join you at the gym for a great twist on the traditional “girls night.” Working out together makes it much more enjoyable and, we all know, the more fun you have, the more committed you will be in achieving your health goals. Need the perfect outfit to get you going? Be inspired by none other than America’s Toughest Trainer Jillian Michaels. Along with the K-Swiss Blade-Max sneakers, The Jillian Michaels Collection includes sports bras, tank tops and pants that will make you feel confident and flirty both in and out of the gym.

If you’re looking to try a new activity or change up your routine, video games have evolved into great fitness “trainers.” Become a Lady Foot Locker VIP this January for a chance to win the newest “Your Shape: Fitness Evolved” for the Xbox Kinect; these VIP experiences are created to enhance an active and healthy lifestyle for every lady. Facebook fans of Lady Foot Locker also get daily updates on the latest style and fitness trends and tips (and some very exclusive giveaways).

2012 will be your year, so own it and do it in style! Be daring and do something new everyday. And, when in doubt, turn to your ladies (and Lady Foot Locker) for support.
