Nowhere was the spectrum of fashion more clearly pushed in 2011 than on the radio. Well, on the people on the radio, to be more exact.
Fashion and music have always gone hand in hand, but the pop music circus proved to be a more fertile than usual breeding ground for an explosion of trends. Perhaps it was because women – all embodying different attitudes and styles – ruled the charts this year, providing them constant exposure on television and their red carpet capers. The only guy to make much of an impression on both the charts and the sartorial stakes was Bruno Mars – and even then all he did was wear a hat.
The girls, however, fearlessly led the trendy way. Here, the ladies (and a dude) from MediaCorp Radio present the evidence.
Rosalyn Lee as Lady Gaga: Androgyny
Borrowing a piece – more specifically, the tuxedo – from the gentleman’s wardrobe was a wildly favourable Autumn/Winter 2011 trend. The tuxedo movement, which was spurred by fashion empires such as Dolce Gabbana, Chanel, Givenchy, Lanvin and Balmain, saw fashion fiends like Phoebe Philo of Celine and Kirsten Dunst rocking its dapper splendour at the Council Of Fashion Designers Of America (CFDA) Awards ceremony. But it took Lady Gaga – who else? – to elevate the look to mass consciousness when she showed up as her male alter ego Jo Calderone at the MTV Video Music Awards. Instead of a crisp white shirt, Gaga threw on a raggedy white T-shirt with a rather sharp black tux. It was an improvement from meat.
“I used to be really, really into her until she just got too much for me. She just dresses to shock and I find myself rolling my eyes more than going, ‘Wow, it’s so cool’”. Actually, I’m more curious to see what she wears at home. Does she own normal clothes? Does she own jeans?” – 987FM’s Rozz on Gaga
Jean Danker as Nicki Minaj: More is more
Colours, textures and patterns all played a vital role in forming one of Fall/Winter 2011 key trends – and the bulk of rap princess Nicki Minaj’s wardrobe. Trinidadian-born, American-raised Minaj sampled the runways of Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Comme des Garcons and Etro, constantly tossing up a merry medley of fun, zest and zing in her brightly hued dresses, jackets, accessories and shoes – whether they matched or not.
“She’s all about outrageous, bright colours, which I love as well. I always try to be in a bright colour – neon pinks and lime greens and things like that. I love (her) outrageousness … I couldn’t commit to it every day but it’s a lot of fun!” – Class 95FM’s Jean on Nicki
Georgina Chang as Katy Perry: Retro glamour
And then there was Katy Perry, who successfully nailed the retro glamour of the ’60s, which made a comeback in a big way this Autumn/Winter season. Designers like Christopher Bailey of Burberry Prorsum and Raf Simons of Jil Sander married clean cut button-ups and sleek linen suit pants in their London and Milan shows respectively, proving that streamlined silhouettes and cocoon profiles still work supremely well together.
“Her style is fun, sexy, girly and yet very appealing. I won’t emulate the candy frost colours because it’s not my style but I can see why a lot of girls do … It’s fun to dress up like Katy Perry because you’re being a little bit experimental.” – Lush 99.5FM’s Georgina on Katy
Justin Ang as Adele: Ladylike dressing
English singer-songwriter Adele took the female-pop-singer-road less travelled and actually covered her body in clothing. Ladylike dressing was a huge trend at the Spring/Summer 2011 showcases in Paris, New York, London and Milan, and the 23-year-old found her wardrobe staples in the form of classic three-quarter length skirts, voluminous dresses and longer hemlines. The unlikely style icon landed the covers of Vogue UK, Cosmopolitan and Glamour – and she’s rumoured to have scored the March 2012 cover of American Vogue.
“Being a woman is really, really hard. There’s always hair in your face, and lashes in your eyes, and hair getting stuck in your lipstick – so I don’t know how women do it, day in day out. I have newfound respect for a woman who puts so much into looking good every day.” – 987FM’s Justin(e) on Adele
Denise Tan as Amy Winehouse: A tribute
We’ll never forget how Amy Winehouse sounded. We won’t forget how she looked either, in all her sculptural beehive tease, bosom-spilling tops and retro eyeliner glory. The dearly departed 27-year-old songbird pointed pop in a whole new direction, and her style is forever cemented in the holy fashion grounds of rock ‘n’ roll.
“I really love the kind of retro sensibility that she had. It’s quite my own personal style – minus the tattoos and the drugs.” – Gold 90.5FM’s Denise on Amy
