The Toronto Zoo showed off its latest addition to the public yesterday: a three month old polar cub. The male cub is the only survivor from a litter of three that was rejected by their mother at birth. Presently, the little tyke who weighs 17kg (that’s like 37 lbs, imperialists), doesn’t have a name so the zoo is asking us to help name him via their Facebook page and website. Just please don’t name him Snowball.

So it looks like Gordon Chong is backing off his road tolls idea, telling the Globe that tolls are merely “one tool in the toolkit” to the fund the Sheppard subway extension. Apparently Chong now believes that the private sector can be expected to come up with 50 to 60 percent of the costs of the line, a number that’s considerably higher than former estimates. If you don’t think that’s realistic that just shows your “sheer ignorance and lack of any business skills whatsoever,” says one Doug Ford.

I’m sure he’s not the first. One Toronto Occupier actually has deep roots in the 1 per cent world. He called himself “Agent Smith” when he moved into St. James Park, but his real name is Antonin Yvan Mongeau, a former president of a once-lucrative web company, who owns a loft at Yonge and Eglinton, and is the son of an international investment banker. Mongeau is apparently estranged from his silver spoon-wielding family and claims they didn’t become apart of the 1 per cent until after he left home at 20.

Although there’s no way of knowing if there will be a work stoppage on account of failed negotiations between the City and CUPE 416, the Star has a good explainer on the situation and what might happen if a deal isn’t reached by the Sunday deadline.

In light of Black History Month, NOW features three local fashionistas — a designer, an agent, a blogger — who are leading the way for diversity on the catwalk.

IN BRIEF:

My task? To find fashion-forward students, take their pictures, and ask them questions about the looks they put together and what inspired them. The result? Three fabulously-dressed ladies with wonderful taste and an eye for style.

Sophomore early childhood education major Laura Killion was in the mail room of the BSC, and her style caught my eye right away. Her flowery dress and leggings combo was perfect for inserting some spring sunshine to a rainy Etown day. What I also noticed about her ensemble was the fact she was sporting Uggs. I know everyone (myself included) wants to schlep around wearing them with yoga pants and hoodies. But ladies, take note. Killion is the perfect example of how to wear these moon boot look-a-likes and still look absolutely put-together.

After asking her the basics about her outfit (the dress was from Target: obviously a great place for fun style on the cheap side!), I asked her about the inspiration for her ensemble. While Killion said she doesn’t follow the style of any celebrities in particular, perusing through magazines, especially “People,” gives her fun ideas about what to pair together.

The first thing I noticed about senior political science major Hannah Desmond was her boots. I can’t tell you how many pairs of boots I own, but I can tell you that none of them could hold a candle to her Lucky Brands. Seeing these shoes actually brought me pain; knowing they weren’t mine was excruciating. Moving on past my insatiable desires, I also couldn’t help but notice how her grey, wool coat hit her legs at almost the exact same place her dress did, and it was absolutely flattering. Combined with a scarf tied just right and black leggings, this outfit translated into the perfect example of winter wear: just because you’re covered up by a coat doesn’t mean you can’t still look amazing. (Side note: This girl’s glasses were fantastic. So chic.)

Although she is a regular reader of “Vogue,” instead of getting style ideas from celebrities, Desmond relies on the keen eye of fashion insiders like Marc Jacobs and catalogs from Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie to inspire her looks. I definitely got the Anthropologie vibe from those boots, but could also feel the UO sense evident in the perfect, eclectic mix of styles.

My fashion winner of the week was sophomore early childhood education major Rachel Goss. This girl brought a fresh face to classic American style. I first noticed her bright green peacoat, a nice variation on the typical black or navy. The best part? It was on sale at dELiA*s during Black Friday. I intended to feature another winter look, but when Goss took her coat off, the outfit underneath was just too good to be true. Her dark wash jeans, cardigan and Target boots were put together so well. Although she said essentially every part of the outfit was snatched up on sale, this ensemble looked anything but cheap.

In addition, I loved her hair. Having had long hair since middle school, the thought of chopping it all off is terrifying. Not for Goss. When work at a summer camp meant running around during hot days, she took the plunge and cut her once longer hair into a fun, chic bob (which she loves).

She’s an avid reader of “Seventeen” (what girl isn’t?), but shies away from the conventional “Vogue”-like magazines. While not a fashion follower of any celebrities, Goss did say she thinks Reese Witherspoon is “so precious” and “bubbly.” After talking to her for only a few minutes and observing her outfit, one could say the same about Goss.

This week’s episode starts with host Angela getting the designers together in Central Park to reveal their new challenge: finding a muse among the many parkgoers, and then creating a “fashion forward” look inspired by them. There’s a very clever catch, as is the Runway way: These muses must be convinced to give up (some of) the clothes they’re wearing to be used as raw materials for this week’s designs. More specifically, at least 50 percent of each designer’s new look must come from muse-sourced, pre-worn garments. (Their $150 budget can be used, in part, to help bribe would-be muses into participating, but must also cover their Mood purchases.) Angela gives them 30 minutes to find their new muse, but presumably none of them could — let’s blame tourists, like always — because the next thing you know, they’re in Union Square.

It’s that time of year for Vanity’s Fair’s annual Hollywood Issue! These eleven lovely ladies are the creme de la creme of Hollywood. Of course, only a group of four can make it on the cover, which can be seen at the far left. And of course…they are all white.

Photo property of Vanity Fair

This year’s group includes a motley crew of beautiful actresses. Here’s the breakdown:

Rooney Mara: She’s broken onto the scene with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, after a small part in The Social Network. I haven’t seen it yet, because I’m determined to find the time to read the books before I see the movie. But what I think is very interesting is that Rooney’s grandfather owned…the NEW YORK GIANTS. What a small world! Also, her sister is the amazzzzzingggly talented actress Kate Mara. (LOVED her in Transsiberian. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a total thrill.)

Mia Wasikowska: The waify Australian from Alice in Wonderland and The Kids are All Right. I’m not obsessed.

Jennifer Lawrence: BALLER ALERT! Jennifer Lawrence proved her acting skills in the terrifyingly awesome Winter’s Bone, a movie that jumps into my head any time I see a chainsaw. But she’ll soon be a full fledged box office boss with the release of The Hunger Games, in which she plays leading lady Katniss Everdeen. Destined for awesomeness.

Jessica Chastain: In The Help and The Tree of Life. Has a 3 legged rescue dog = awarded extra points for remainder of life.

Elizabeth Olsen: This is where all the acting talent of the Olsen family went. Stick to fashion, Mary Kate and Ashley, because Elizabeth has the chops you never did. She is WONDERFUL in Martha Marcy May Marlene as a girl who escapes a cult. Her future’s so bright, I’ve gotta wear shades. (HA GET IT?!?)

Adepero Oduye: One of the 2 African American ladies on the list, and naturally, hidden behind the fold.

Shailene Woodley: The beautiful daughter of George Clooney in The Descendants. I haven’t seen that either, but I hear she’d great. Made waves by wearing those creepy toe shoes at a Golden Globes party. Messing with the norm= instant win in my book.

Paula Patton: Since she’s married to singer Robin Thicke, that means her father in law is Dr. Jason Seaver from Growing Pains! Extra points awarded!

Felicity Jones: English actress, rose to fame with indie hit “Like Crazy.” Honestly, I had to google her.

Lily Collins: ummmmm…Her dad is Phil Collins. Do you think he sings her to sleep with “In the Air Tonight?”

Brit Marling: She’s in Another Earth. I don’t really have much of an opinion here.

2 of these actresses are black, which is Vanity Fair’s usually “minority quota.” This year, and the majority of other years in which they’ve been doing the Hollywood issue, no minorities get on the cover. They are ALWAYS hidden behind the fold. Don’t try to tell me it’s a coincidence.

Here’s what my friend, Katherine Swanson, a law student specializing in critical race theory, had to say about the subject:

“The covers of Vanity Fair are symptomatic of a broader problem in Hollywood. While there are fewer quality roles for women, there are even fewer roles for women of color. Its easy to look at the VF cover and simply say, “well there are more white actresses than black actresses.” This should be challenged. Black women are given fewer roles and the roles they are frequently offered are riddled with stereotypes (for example, the leads in The Help, while excellent performances, are exemplifying the “Mammy” stereotype).

The lack of roles for women of color does not completely explain the years of problematic Vanity Fair covers. Colorlines proposed an alternative cover loaded with well known women of color. Vanity Fair does not frequently feature women of color or women who do not conform to “white” standards of beauty. I’m a long time subscriber to Vanity Fair and I have the back issues to prove this point. Publications like Vanity Fair and movies like The Help unfold from a white perspective that is universally accepted as ‘the norm’. Other perspectives are as compelling if not more compelling and should be featured prominently. Vanity Fair isn’t the only popular publication that has this problem. How frequently are women of color featured on Harpers Bazaar or Vogue? Rarely. Rather than printing another article about Jackie Kennedy or Marilyn Monroe, perhaps Vanity Fair should focus on more inclusive publishing.”

Okay I’m back. Above, Katherine mentions The Help. After seeing Octavia Spencer win so many awards for The Help, I thought maybe I should see the movie. (I had previously resisted because my boss had seen it and it made her cry, so I was under the impression it would be sad, which I can’t handle.) But then it occurred to me that I was curious whether it would be the same “White People Swoop In and Save the Day” racism as The Blind Side. We’re just not doing anyone any favors by pushing these cleaner versions of racism, like in The Help. I mean, being a maid in the south in the 50’s/60’s wasn’t all giggles and singing and baking poop into pies.

So you might say that was then, and now it’s all better. But you think that racism is gone now? It’s 2012, and even one of the most famous directors in the world, George Lucas, found it nearly impossible to get a film made in Hollywood that featured an all-black cast.

Lucas said: “It’s because it’s an all-black movie. There’s no major white roles in it at all…I showed it to all of them and they said nooooo. We don’t know how to market a movie like this.”

I’m not saying that putting out a more diverse Vanity Fair cover will change the world. It won’t, I guess. And this isn’t a conservative vs. liberal thing, so don’t pull that card either. It’s a common sense thing. Racism will never actually be eradicated unless the fantasy we see on magazines and the big screen stops perpetuating the image of a strictly white world.
(Colorlines)

The Project Runway All Stars have to convince total strangers in Central Park to give them their clothes. I can only imagine all of the editing that went into this episode. I’m sure many New Yorkers aren’t very friendly about their refusals when some stranger asks for the “Clothes Off Your Back”

Anthony thinks he’s got the edge because you need a personality to get someone to disrobe for you. To prove it, he gets some guy to take his shorts off which leaves him hanging out in his underwear in the middle of the park. No dressing room necessary.

Of course Austin’s the one who runs over and gets his phone number. It’s all about multi-tasking and no one says you can’t pick up a date while you’re searching for your muse.

With whatever funds they have left the designers are allowed to go shopping at Mood but 50% of their total outfit must be made from the clothes they picked up on the street.

Kara ends up three dollars short at Mood and I’m happy to see the other designers kick in what they have left. They may get catty sometimes but overall this group are good sports.

Back at the work room the scrambling begins. Austin’s inspiration is this cool punk rock chick. It’s the last thing I’d guess he would pick. Mondo goes with a sort of psychedelic striped summer dress. Jerell chose an African inspired print but it’s hard to tell what the heck he’s doing with it.

Did Joanna Coles make an appearance? Yes, I believe she did but it was so boring I hardly even noticed.

How I long to hear Tim Gunn say make it work.

Michael gripes that Kara has Kenly help her with her pants. Not sure what the Project Runway rules say about that but the show doesn’t stop it so maybe it’s not an issue.

The guest judge this week is Sean Avery. He’s a player for the National Hockey League and he interned at Vogue. How often do you see that?

The Top 3:

Rami – They love the shorts of this professional summer look. Isaac likes that he focused on the tailoring but Sean thinks the hat looks forced.

Mondo – Angela loves the whole outfit. Georgina thinks all the detail is divine and Isaac likes that it’s bare but controlled but then he laments that it’s almost too stylish. What on earth does that mean?

Austin – Georgina says the designer punk rock look is sweet but has a toughness to it. Sean thinks it’s too much and Isaac deems it out of control but fabulous.

The Bottom 3:

Michael – Angela thinks It looks more like a swimsuit than a shorts set. Isaac complains that the top needs more structure. Sean thinks it would have gone better with a jacket and the model just looks uncomfortable. Maybe he should have kept the doily looking sleeves instead of going strapless.

Jerell – Isaac says it looks like a costume that just walked off of the stage at The Lion King and showing that much stomach is the opposite of sexy. But Georgina thinks it’s exciting.

Anthony – Georgina loves the jumpsuit but did he use 50% of the fabric from the streets? Isaac thinks Anthony got lazy. The shirt he got as inspiration is only used to make a purse.

It’s funny how all three of the ladies are all safe. Who saw that coming?

The winner is Mondo. He finally wins one but you knew it would happen eventually.

Anthony’s going home. He didn’t use his muse as inspiration and didn’t use enough street fabric. But he’ll always have cute shoes.

Anthony’s one of the more fun contestants and I wish he hadn’t dropped the ball on this one. I’ll miss him.

Next week it’s a fashion face-off or as they say on Project Runway, the wrestling match of fashion.
