<p>Though my birth year lands me shy of the macramé generation, I learned to love hand-made jewelry, ceramics and textiles through the Southwest School of Art. It started when the school, then the Southwest Craft Center, was new and offered a class including, if not macramé, batik and silk screening. From there it dawned on me that objects made by hand in clay, copper, paper pulp, yarn, iron, etc., can possess the same heft as an oil painting in a museum.</p>
<p>Guests at the Fiber Artists of San Antonio&#8217;s 2012 luncheon and presentation, May 12 at Oak Hills Country Club, must have undergone a similar shift in values (some for the umpteenth time) upon viewing 100-plus hand-woven, stitched, dyed or otherwise embellished capes, skirts, jackets and shawls. Adding to the intrigue of handmade fashions, participating fiber artists used worldwide cultures as inspiration for a show called Fashion Extravaganza Around the World.</p>
<p>About 35 of the organization&#8217;s 160 or so members had works in the fashion showcase. The others, said member                Maria Davis, make fiber art “mostly to get their emotions out in their work.” They take it seriously, however. Midway through the silent auction, a bag of yarn was up to $75.</p>
<p>The emotional temperature of the room rose noticeably when Express-News fashion writer                Michael Quintanilla took to the stage to emcee the hourlong show. (Or maybe it was his lime green shoes and tie, complemented by a purple scarf from the silent auction, that got the ladies tittering.) Enjoying the show front and center was                Kathleen Sommers, there with fiber artist                Robin Early and her partner,                EmilyOliver.                Neesie Beal and her mother,                Edna Bitter, and sister,                Carol Collins, joined                Sharon Dukes,                Pam Brenner and                Mary Tome.                MaggieSauer was with her “other mother,”                Elfriede Parkinson, one of many residents of Air Force Village who attended. The exotic music of                Jesse Garza&#8217;s Acoustic Dream mirrored the styles of fashions with names such as “Dancing Sunset” and “Blue Wave.”</p>
<p>Coming full circle, proceeds from the luncheon will be used for scholarships to schools including the Southwest School of Art.</p>

<p><strong>Large-scale prints at StoneMetal Press</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>In an innovative take on another ancient medium, printmaking, StoneMetal Press is hosting an extravaganza to which the public is invited at 9 a.m. Saturday. In the Blue Star Art Complex parking lot, artists including                Alex Rubio,                Rick Hunter,                Gloria Sanchez-Hart and                David Blanca will create large-format, 3-by-4-foot prints using any of 17 million colors except black. Some artists are old hands at large-scale printmaking and others are newbies. “All of this makes for a cutting-edge experience,” said board member                Michael Imbimbo. StoneMetal Press is the only nonprofit community printing press in the region.</p>

<p><strong>Lemonade Day fundraiser</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>In retail as in real estate, location is as important as product. That&#8217;s what                Matthew Parker and other Alamo Heights Middle School members of the Alpha Charity League learned from selling lemonade on Lemonade Day, May 6. Their site? The Alamo.</p>
<p>“It was all their idea, and they had to get their own permits from the city to do it,” said local Lemonade Day director                Selia Straus.</p>
<p>“They had fun selling sugar-rimmed lemonade to tourists and made more than $500 for charity,” said Parker&#8217;s mother,                JanisLudwig. Others running the stand were seventh- and eighth-graders                Graham Penrose,                Garrett Gatens,                Zachary Seidel,                Logan Miller,                Thomas Hardy and                William King.</p>
<p>Their stand was one of 2,000 across San Antonio, part of a nationwide program to teach children about business by selling lemonade. Winner of best-tasting lemonade was                Isabella Holmbo, 8, who made her version with fresh lavender and peaches from Fredericksburg. Her prize: a year of free Whataburgers. There&#8217;s an irony in there somewhere.</p>

<p>From big hair to short bobs and high waists to low rise – British women have worn it all. In fact, according to research by mature online retailer isme.com, British women are masters in the art of reinvention, completely changing their look on average six times during their adult lives.</p>
<p>That means far more than just trying a new shade of lipstick. The survey of 1,000 women aged 50+ also demonstrates that a reinvention involves a total departure from one look in favour of another.</p>
<p>So confident are British women about transforming their physical appearance that 2.4 million will have completely rebooted their wardrobe 10 times before they reach their 60s – on each occasion ditching the clothes, shoes, makeup and accessories associated with one fashion life and replacing them with a collection for a new direction.</p>
<p>The results also show how accessible fashion has impacted the nation’s sense of style and change. Although they point to the average British woman experiencing an ‘eight-year reinvention itch’, a significant proportion of today’s over 50s (40 per cent) have gone through more reinventions in the last 10 years than at any other time in their lives.</p>
<p>And it doesn’t stop with what they wear, as the study by isme.com reveals how 3.8 million women have radically changed the cut of their hair 11 times over the years – from perms to power fringes and everything in between. What’s more, 2.5 million (24 per cent) women admit to having dramatically altered their hair colour 12 times in the pursuit of reinvention &#8211; sporting shades of blonde, brunette, black, platinum, grey, red and even purple.</p>
<p>As part of this research, isme.com set out to understand the precise motivations behind British women’s chameleon-like approach to their appearances. For 18 per cent of those surveyed, it would seem that the desire to shed an existing sartorial style was a way of escaping from a fashion-rut.</p>
<p>Delving further into the results, one in 10 (1.2 million) saw reinvention as an effective way of being taken more seriously in the workplace, while many others were spurred into reinvention following a major life shakeup &#8211; from kids leaving home to relationships breaking down.</p>
<p>However, for the overwhelming majority, the desire to reinvent comes simply from fashion being so accessible and immediate nowadays – giving modern women unparalleled opportunities to continually reinvent themselves whatever their age.</p>
<p>Nowhere is this more apparent than when comparing the reinventions of today’s 50+ ladies with those from previous generations.  In fact, according to the results of the study, two thirds of mature women in the 1980s had never reinvented their appearance for the duration of their adult lives.</p>
<p>While modern British women have what is arguably an innate and unrivalled ability to recreate their appearances, 33 per cent (3.5 million) of those surveyed admitted they had been inspired to do so after seeing celebrity tales of reinvention. Top amongst these celeb reinventors are:</p>

<p>Harley Street psychologist, Ingrid Collins explains why we may feel the urge to refresh our appearance: “When we look in the mirror, we expect to see a very familiar image, and we have to do this every day. Reinventing our image not only to makes other people sit up and take notice of us, but also allows us to express an aspect of our multifaceted personalities.</p>
<p> “A change of image can mark a milestone in our lives – spelling a renewed sexiness, a youthful attitude, sophistication, rebellion, high self-value; any number of messages that help people around us understand what is going on in our life before we’ve said a word to them.”</p>
<p>Jackie Lewis, Shapeologist for isme.com’s Savoir range, which is tailored especially to fit a woman’s body as she reaches 50+ adds, “Women’s bodies go through three key phases of change – from adolescence to womanhood, once again when we have had families, and a third time as we pass our late 40s. This also drives the clothes choices we make, whether consciously or subconsciously.</p>
<p>“It’s natural to like to experiment in our youth, but as we get older we develop a much stronger sense of personal style and understanding of our bodies. You can always try new trends as long as you remember to focus on what you like best on yourself and make sure the fit of your clothes accentuates that. All our clothes on the Savoir range are tailored on models of a woman’s body shape aged 50+, so the fit will always be right without having to compromise on style.”</p>

<p>Clint Eastwood isn&#8217;t exactly known for his fashion flair, but the same can&#8217;t be said of the ladies in his life. </p>
<p>His daughter, Francesca, and wife Dina stepped out in LA today to promote their new reality show in similar candy-coloured frocks. </p>
<p>The director&#8217;s 18-year-old daughter&#8217;s pale skin looked lovely against her vibrant pink and white mini-dress. </p>

<p>Her pale pink lipstick perfectly matched the sweet shade on her shoes. </p>
</p>
<p>Francesca&#8217;s mother is Titantic actress Frances Fischer, whom ended her relationship with Eastwood less than two years after their daughter&#8217;s birth. </p>
<p>46-year-old Dina looked quite swarthy next to her pale stepdaughter. </p>

<p>She showed off her tan in a crocheted lemon dress which was offset perfectly by her pale jewellery and dark hair. </p>
<p>The two were in Los Angeles to film an episode of Extra with Mario Lopez this morning at The Grove. </p>
<p>They were promoting their new reality show, Mrs. Eastwood  Company. </p>
<p>Patriarch Clint, 81, only appears in two episodes of the programme, which premieres on May 20. </p>

<p>The cameos &#8211; one scene involved a family dinner, the other a wedding &#8211; were hard to come by. </p>
<p>Dina told The Daily Beast: &#8216;Yeah, I had to twist his arm, you bet. I would never want to put Clint’s career in jeopardy. That’s my worst nightmare. But Clint is untouchable.&#8217;</p>
<p>She added: &#8216;I’ve read so many mean things about me, and I think it’s entertaining because the Internet brings out the worst in people a lot of times.&#8217;</p>

<p>One person who doesn&#8217;t think negatively about her is her stepdaughter. </p>
<p>Said Francesca: &#8216;She’s crazy, wild, and hilarious. She’s sort of the opposite of my dad, who’s very calm, so they really balance each other out well.&#8217; </p>
<p>The E! reality show will also feature Dina and Clint&#8217;s 16-year-old daughter Morgan. </p>
