Red Carpet Fashion At The SAG Awards

Share

The Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) Awards were held in Los Angeles last night at the Shrine auditorium and as always, the red carpet fashion didn’t disappoint.

No particular color was prominent (unlike the featured blush tones at the Golden Globes a couple weeks back) and Hollywood’s leading ladies looked relaxed in their dress choices, everything from short and tight to loose and demure.

Just when you thought she couldn’t get any more comfortable on the red carpet, Lea Michele kicked things up a notch with a high-split Versace dress, Casadei shoes, Lorraine Schwartz jewelry and Fendi bag.

We adore raven-haired Emma Stone in black and she chose a gorgeous Alexander McQueen tea-length strapless dress.

A big winner on the night, Viola Davis looked luminous in a white and gold Marchesa strapless gown with Jimmy Choo shoes.

The always vivacious Sofia Vergara lit up the carpet in a berry-colored Marchesa dress and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Grand dame Meryl Streep kept it conservative and age-appropriate in a Vivienne Westwood dress with a brown belt and Fred Leighton jewels.

Another Glee star, Amber Riley rocked a pretty Badgley Mischka dress and up ‘do.

Comedienne Melissa McCarthy, nominated for a supporting actress SAG for Bridesmaids, wore Badgley Mischka, Neil Lane jewelry and Yves Saint Laurent shoes.

A glowing Octavia Spencer (in Tadashi Shoji) won for the best supporting actress statue for her role in The Help.

Stunning Australian actress Rose Byrne gave fresh appeal on the carpet in a cream Elie Saab pantsuit.

A demure-looking Zoe Saldana chose a cream Givenchy Haute Couture dress and Guiseppe Zanotti heels.

Smoking hot actress Naya Rivera wore a low-cut, beaded Naeem Khan dress with loose curls.

Open Toe Pumps in Python Leather

These python printed leather pump with platform heel costs 230 euro. I simply thought that it would nice to just get that out of the way, so that I could focus on the beauty of these shoes given its simplicity. The pointed toe in wood effect simply screams summer. I love the cut out detailing on the side and the platform heel is not too excessive, just the right size.

Such styles of shoes coming out from the wood works, is just a reminder that we all need to start thinking of feet regime for the summer such as scrubbing daily scrubbing of the feet and getting the toe nails well pedicured.

I think they are worth the investment, if you think so too, simply click on there to buy – Ghigo Calzature.

No excuse to dress drab for the job; use the clothes you already have

Far too many aspects of work are already routine — the Starbucks in the morning, your schedule, meetings on Thursdays and that one co-worker who talks too much.

The clothes you wear should not be one of them.

Ladies, forget about purchasing a new wardrobe for your job. Forget the archaic suit and forget the painful heels. You can dress perfectly fine with the clothes you bought to please yourself. Just adjust modern pieces a little to match your job’s atmosphere and you will be comfortable and ready for work.

Following is a list of suggestions on what to wear to different types of jobs using contemporary trends.

Office

A pair of black Steve Madden wedges will nicely complement your black blazer. Wedges add the pumps’ skyscraper height while providing the support and comfort a pair of flats do. Tie your hair up in a ballerina bun to keep your hair out of your face and you’re ready to go!

Working in a cubicle is no excuse for a sad suit or the worn out, charcoal blazer…that is, unless you spice up your outfit a little. Under that poor little blazer, throw on a white collar shirt, like those seen on the Marc Jacobs Ready-to-Wear Fall 2011 collection. Feel free to wear a gold choker necklace and tuck it beneath the collar to add a pop of color to your outfit.

As opposed to wearing the traditional pencil skirt, wear purple pants. Not only will they draw attention to your legs, but color blocking is also making a comeback. Brightly colored pants made their way back into the fashion scene after appearing at Karen Walker Fall 2011 show among many collections.

School

In the case that you work at a school, remember that while you are allowed to express your style, you are also expected to be discreet in your choice of clothes. A decent option is a camel colored knee-length, A-line skirt, for ‘60s mod trends are making a return. Even Prada featured an assortment of mod-style color blocked skirts in its Autumn/Winter ad campaign. Add a sheer pattern shirt, dark brown belt and Oxfords for a professional appeal.

Retail

Clothing and department stores, especially chains like Charlotte Russe and Forever 21, are some of the few work environments that will not censor your sense of style but rather applaud it. However, retail will also take a toll on your feet with traveling across the store and consistently checking of inventory. What’s my point?

Although you may be really excited about your shoes, refrain from wearing those cute 3” heels to work. As an alternative, a pair of combat boots will add a modest amount of grunge to your apparel.

For the ensemble, you can reuse your black maxi skirt from the summer. Maxi skirts continued to appear on fall runways and were also featured in the Valentino Spring 2012 collection. To dress up the outfit, simply tuck in a white or bright colored lacy shirt for a feminine touch.

Eatery

Although most restaurants have a strict dress code, that does not mean you can’t channel your inner Chanel. As a matter of fact, most designers encouraged the use of barista-like and formal apparel with the tuxedo dressing trend. Fashion designers like Jason Wu and Ralph Lauren featured tuxedo tops for women in their Fall 2011 runway shows. While wearing that simple white tuxedo blouse, throw on a silver cuff or short necklace to dress up the look.

You may not have much control over what you wear when you work as a waitress, but what you can change is your hair. Use it to your advantage! Try a slicked hair look or a Dolce and Gabbana French twist for a change of pace. A simple pair of black pants and loafers should complete the masculine ensemble.

Lyanne is a freshman in Media.

Jean Paul Gaultier channels Amy Winehouse, Karl Lagerfeld talks about himself and more

Jean Paul Gaultier couture shows are famous for being visions of grandiose. This year was no exception, with the designer channelling the rock and roll spirit of the late Amy Winehouse. A live acapella band performed the singer’s hits as models strutted down the runway with beehive hair, black veils, lit cigarettes, lip piercings and heavily kohled eyes. Part bordello (silk, corsets, platform shoes and flashes of lacy lingerie), part urban (oversized hoodies, polo tops and baseball jackets), the clothes epitomised Winehouse’s tarty-meets-sporty style. The collection was well received by the fashion community, but Mitch Winehouse, Amy’s dad, told the UK’s The Sun that it was upsetting for him and his family. Gaultier admitted that he’d never met Amy, but said their “styles were similar” and that he intended the tribute to be a “joyous” reflection of her iconic fashion sense. What do you think: too good or too soon?

Another couture show that happened over the past week worth knowing about: Chanel. The seating was super-limited because the setting was, of all places, a plane. The Chanel private jet, complete with overhead luggage compartments and mock windows, was erected over the course of five days in the Grand Palais in Paris. This seems slightly ridiculous given that the actual show lasted no more than ten minutes, but remember who we’re dealing with — last year Karl Lagerfeld imported a real iceberg from Northern Europe to use as a stage prop. Environmental excess aside, the in flight entertainment didn’t disappoint. Having looked to the skies for inspiration, Lagerfeld’s models paraded down the ‘aisle’ in blue boucle suits and sequinned shift dresses. At the end of the show Lagerfeld appeared in the faux cockpit as ‘the pilot’.

Coinciding with the launch of Karl Lagerfeld’s diffusion line Karl by Karl Lagerfeld, Net-a-Porter has released this video. In it, Karl Lagerfled interviews himself. About himself. It’s narcissism at its very best. The Karls also talk about muses (“muse” is not a nice word), improvisation (he never plans out what he’s going to say), and how to be chic (there are peasants in “poor rags” that are chic — but if you have to ask, you’ll never be chic.)

MAC cosmetics always have the best brand ambassadors; recent collaborations include Daphne Guinness, Iris Apfel and Miss Piggy. That latest MAC muse is Beth Ditto of The Gossip fame. The pairing makes sense — Ditto has collaborated with the brand previously (she performed last September at the MAC store in NYC’s Soho for Fashion’s Night Out) and she loves makeup, so much so that she sometimes appears on stage with the stuff purposely smeared all over her face. The collection doesn’t debut until June, but going by the campaign shot we’re predicting it will include inky black eyeliner, pastel nail art and bright pink lips.

Ab Fab’s Patsy and Edina are back in all their spandex–loving, LV monogramed glory. They pulled off a successful Christmas special (which included a cameo from Stella McCartney), more episodes are in the works, and there’s even talk of a feature film. The ladies have just inked a deal with jeweller Alexis Bittar, and are set to star in the forthcoming campaign.

Kate Middleton’s style is one of those things you either love or hate, much like her little sister Pippa’s (guess which side of the fence we’re on with that one). But there’s no denying that the Duchess has an impressive hat collection. As a Brit and a Royal, she has a lot of millinery-friendly events to attend and look pretty at, and generally, she does a good job. As a result, Middleton’s been bestowed the honour of “Hat Person of the Year” by the Headwear Association. It’s the third year the association has given out the award — beanie/baker cap aficionado Brad Pitt, and fedora-loving Johnny Depp, were the previous recipients. Middleton was this year’s clear winner, having received over 90 per cent of the public’s vote from a shortlist of six nominated celebrities. Hats off to her.

Singapore high fashion moves away from shopping malls

From stand-alone big brands on the street to a bespoke cheongsam maker tucked in the heart of the financial district, the latest and hippest Singapore shops are now tucked in all corners of the island.

Here are 10 top stores that prove you don’t have to be a mall rat to experience the best of Singapore’s shopping scene.

Abercrombie Fitch

With 300 branches worldwide, this coveted American casualwear retailer is finally in Singapore, bringing with it a swash of black palettes, dark mirrors and perfume-as-room-spray.

Which of course brings us to the matter of that much-publicized sexy Abercombie Fitch poster. It clearly didn’t offend as many as was expected, staying up right until the store flung open its doors late last year with a bevy of eight-packs.

Knightsbridge, 270 Orchard Road. Open daily 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

Ana Boutique

Australia’s not that far away, but why fork out for an air ticket when you can get the country’s cult designer labels all in one place, on Club Street?

The free-spirited designs of Natasha, princess-worthy tulles of Tutu du Monde and edgy yet effortless silhouettes of Manning Cartell are but a few of the labels that fill up this shophouse space.

In addition, owner Anh Attewell also carries bags, shoes and jewelry to complete the look.

Bigger-boned ladies take note: the boutique stocks British and Australian sizes, right up to 16.

86 Club St. +65 6221 2897. Open Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m. till late. Saturday 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday 1 p.m.-5 p.m.

Flea Trees

The space was a flea market before its current permanent state, although it still retains that vibe.

Vintage finds from buttons of the 1960s and collectible fabrics from Melbourne and Denmark to pre-loved clothes and accessories (for men and women), classic Christian Louboutin shoes, and a Fall 2005 Miu Miu velour bag are up for grabs here.

Husband-and-wife owners Terence Yeung and Bella Koh select the vintage they carry with precision and holistic guidance, mainly via LOHAS — a self-imposed belief in a “lifestyle of health and sustainability.”

#01-10, Blk 68, Seng Poh Lane; +65 8139 1133. Open Monday-Friday 5 p.m.-10 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

HM

The snaking queues and overnight camps made headlines for days. But who could resist the coming of Hennes Mauritz?

Last year’s Singapore opening marks the Swedish high street fashion brand’s first foray into Southeast Asia and the Grange Road flagship is one of the biggest branches in Asia to date, spanning 2,800 square meters over three floors, offering clothing and fashion accessories for women, men, teens and kids.

Apart from affordable trends, the label’s highly coveted collaborations –- pairing up with the likes of Comme des Garçons, Lanvin, Jimmy Choo and Karl Lagerfeld — are sold out within hours of release.

In March, the shop will welcome its Marni for HM collection. Expect a stampede.

1 Grange Road; +65 6235 1459; www.hm.com/sg. Open daily 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

Louis Vuitton – Island Maison

Moving up even higher on the shopping rungs, Louis Vuitton made headlines here for building themselves an “island,” which opened in September of 2011.

Of course, like most of Singapore, it’s man-made, but this glass-enclosed pavilion still stands on its own, and at one of Singapore’s most coveted addresses.

The luxury cruise liner-themed interior houses — apart from the usual men, women and children collections — fine jewelry, the biggest LV bookstore (yes, bookstore) in the world, travel accessories and an art exhibition space.

There are a few ways to arrive, but the private launch is by far our favorite.

Crystal Pavilion North, Marina Bay Sands, 10 Bayfront Ave. +65 6788 3888. Open daily 10 a.m.-11 p.m.

Maison Ikkoku

It’s all about the boys at Maison Ikkoku, which features international menswear and accessories sourced mainly from Japan, the United States, Britain and France.

Owners Thomas Ho, Janice Ong, Franz Chua and Shanie Teoh have converted their three-story shophouse into a café on the first floor, a boutique on the second, and a soon-to-be cocktail bar on the third in an attempt to bring a slice of Tokyo into Singapore.

Pick up brands like Twins for Peace, Industry of All Nations, Pierre Hardy, Publish, Orlebar Brown, Nuggets and Lad Musician.

20 Kandahar St., +65 6294 0078; www.maison-ikkoku.net. Open Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-9 p.m, Friday-Saturday 9 a.m.-11 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m.-7 p.m.

Michael Kors

America’s next billion-dollar retailer, Michael Kors has finally arrived in Singapore.

Kors called the Lion City “a fabulous shopping place not just for people here in Singapore but for everyone around the region.” And we have to agree.

The “Project Runway” judge opened his first stand-alone boutique on the island in November last year, a cream-toned 155-square-meter store outfitted with zebra rugs.

The store features an all-inclusive selection: clothes, bags and accessories from across the different Michael Kors collections.

#01-16/17 Scotts Square, 8 Scotts Road; +65 6734 7088.

Nana Bird

Another pop-up-store-turned permanent fixure, Nana Bird was originally opened inside Georgina “Nana” Koh’s home in Tiong Bahru.

Together with good friend Tan Chiewling, they set up shop whenever and wherever they could (it took them as far as Shanghai) until they landed their permanent digs in the backyard of a 1930s shophouse.

The space is narrow and minimalist, yet big enough to display all their wares. On one side, an old door acts as a table for Natalie B Coleman and Urte Karalaite necklaces, porcelain rings and feather earrings. On the other, racks are filled with Aijek, Patouf, Les Filles by and Snoozer Loser.

79 Chay Yan St., Unit 01-02, +65 9117 0430; www.nanaandbird.com. Open Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.. Weekdays by appointment only.

Ong Shunmugam

Priscilla Shunmugam has a way with fabrics, and it shows.

The lawyer-turned-designer/tailor first turned heads with her batik skirts tailored to fit modern designs, but is now better known for her innovative take on the cheongsam.

No longer just working on custom orders at home, the part-Chinese part-Indian (the label’s name is a combination of her parents’ last names) now operates out of her atelier in Hong Leong Building.

Reworking familiar silhouettes, she weaves traditional textile techniques into a modern wardrobe. As orders have increased rapidly since she opened her atelier, Shunmugam now has at least a few pieces in the wardrobe she can tweak to fit any body shape.

B1-36 Hong Leong Building, 16 Raffles Quay; +65 6223 4804; www.ongshunmugam.com

Seafolly

It took a long time, but top Australian cossie brand Seafolly finally planted its first international flagship store outside Oz in Wisma Atria.

One-piece, two-piece, hats, kaftans, totes and towels, Seafolly is a one-stop shop that looks like a slice taken straight out of Down Under: minimalist light wood boards, bright spotlights and plenty of space for kids to strut their stuff.

Buxom ladies have a wide range of choices too, with sizes right up to an E cup available.

#02-16-17, Wisma Atria, +65 6733 3995; www.seafolly.com.au.
